How to Eliminate Spring Allergens in Your Home

Eliminate Home Allergies

Allergy season is upon us, but you don't have to suffer while at home!  There are steps you can take to rid your home of allergens to create relief from the great outdoors.

  • Keep your windows closed and use air conditioning to keep pollen and allergens outside of your home.
  • Declutter your home to make dusting and cleaning easier.
  • Wash blankets, sheets, and pillow cases at least weekly in hot water.
  • Vacuum and mop your floors frequently.  A vacuum with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter works best.
  • Replace your air filter to ensure you're getting the best filtration possible.
  • Consider furniture made of easily-washable materials such as leather and wood instead of upholstered items.
  • Wear a dust mask while you clean to avoid breathing pollen, dust, and other particles that may aggravate your allergies.
  • Place one doormat outside your entry door and another inside.  This will help trap allergens on shoes as people enter your home.  If you use your patio or balcony, place them inside and outside your balcony doors as well.
  • Remove your shoes before walking around the house to further reduce the amount of allergens tracked in.
  • Purchase a room air filter to catch airborne particles in your home.
  • Use a damp cloth when dusting to keep dust and particles from scattering in the air.
