Spring Living: Create an Outdoor Retreat on Your Private Patio or Balcony

With the warmer weather finally here (woohoo!), now is the time to turn your patio or balcony into a retreat.  Fresh air in the evening after work can help melt stress away, and a comfy spot in the sun is one of the best places to spend time on the weekend.  Entertaining guests outdoors can expand your living space during a gathering and creates an excellent social area on nice nights.

To start your space, invest in a small bistro table and chairs.  Though small, a bistro table makes the perfect place to dine al fresco or sip morning coffee with a newspaper.  Often sold in sets with chairs, choose a design that is stylish and comfortable so you'll enjoy sitting outdoors.  Add a little personal style with outdoor pillows that will provide some cushion and look great even in the elements.

Great options for apartment dwellers are LED lanterns.  You can surround yourself with an evening glow without the fire hazards of traditional oil lamps or candles.  There are so many popular options found at almost any home goods store or general retailer.

In addition to container gardens, small trees and non-flowering plants can be some great low-maintenance methods to add greenery to your outdoor living space.  Cannas, coleus, and Myer Lemon Trees are great options and available at most home improvement stores and nurseries.
