While we may love our furry friends, we maybe don't love the damage that our pets can do to our homes so much. This can be a problem especially when we live in rented pet-friendly apartments.
Whether it's pet hair everywhere or our pet stains on the carpet, there is no escaping the fact that pets can cause a lot of mess and destruction. Even if you live in cat-friendly or dog-friendly apartments, you may still worry about losing your deposit. This article is here to help you keep your home clean and looking great with pets.
Keep Your Pet Well-Groomed
A clean pet can make for a clean home. Make sure you keep on top of washing and grooming your pet. Washing and brushing your pet regularly will help prevent excessive shedding and molting all over your home.
Choose Pet-Friendly Furniture Fabric
Furniture can become easily soiled or stained (or sometimes even a little stinky) if you allow your pets on it. Certain fabrics absorb odors more than others. Avoid natural fabrics as these will more readily retain odor. Opt for man-made materials such as polypropylene, polyester, and olefin. Scotch-guarding your furniture is a great way to prevent staining as well.
Scrub Your Sofa
Spritz your sofa with distilled water, then use dish soap and a soft brush to remove stains or pet odors from your upholstered furniture. Wipe away any liquid with a clean, dry cloth. If you have a sofa made of natural fabrics, resist the temptation to clean this yourself as you may shrink the material. Instead, opt for a professional cleaning.
Put Your Pet Toys in The Washing Machine
Pet toys such as fabric mice or dog chew toys accumulate pet fur and dirt. These could do with being washed every few days. Put any fabric toys in the washing machine and anything plastic in the dishwasher. Get into the habit of cleaning your pet's toys regularly and you will notice fewer odors.
Choose the Right Vacuum
A vacuum that is designed for pet hair will save you a considerable amount of time and will make your home much cleaner. Often, a vacuum with shorter, stiffer bristles will help provide the best suction to remove pet hair from your carpets. Choose a vacuum that has a turbine that will stop hair from getting tangled and opt for a device that has a HEPA filter to capture allergens.
Use Washable Flooring
There are only certain types of messes that can be vacuumed or swept up. Choosing washable throw rugs that can be tossed in the washing machine will make your life much easier when dealing with pet messes.
Promptly Clean Up Accidents
If your pet has an accident, there are solutions to help you to get urine stains and odors out efficiently. First, ensure you clean the stain quickly otherwise your pet will use the same spot time after time. Pet urine has a strong odor and if you don't clean it up quickly the smell will linger.
Using an enzymatic cleaner is your best bet for neutralizing pet odors. There are many options available from local pet stores and online retailers. Be sure to read the packaging to make sure it is safe to use with your furniture and flooring.
