February 29 is Leap Day

Today, February 29, is leap day.  Over the years some major events have occurred on February 29.  Here are a few fun facts and traditions we can celebrate every 4 years.

-St. Petersburg, FL was incorporated on 2/29/1892.

-Hattie McDaniel becomes the first African American to win an Academy Award for her role in Gone with the Wind on 2/29/1940.

-Gordie Howe, player for the NHL team the Hartford Whalers, scored his 800th goal on 2/29/1980.

-Someone born on February 29 is often referred to as a "leapling."  Leaplings can opt out to celebrate their birthdays on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years.

-Rare Disease Day is observed on February 29 in leap years.

-Only 1 in 1,461 people are born on leap day.  Leaplings are said to have unusual talents.

-Rapper Ja Rule was born on February 29, 1976.

-The first warrants for arrests in the Salem witchcraft trials were issued on February 29, 1692.
