Vacation Tips for Apartment Renters

Vacation season is here!  We want you to have a stress-free vacation and return home to your apartment just the way you left it.  Here are some tips to help you prep your apartment for vacation.

Avoid Burning Excess Energy While Away

According to Green Living Ideas, air conditioning accounts for more energy use than any other appliance.  You can save 2% on your cooling costs for each degree you increase the thermostat during your absence in summer months.  By turning up your thermostat to about 85-degrees, you can save on your utility bill while still keeping your apartment climate controlled for furniture, plants, and more.

Unplug small appliances such as computers, televisions, chargers, etc. for additional energy savings.

Prep your Plumbing

Shut off plumbing to your sinks and toilets before heading off (using the valves behind the toilets and under the sink) to prevent any major water damage in the off-chance you spring a leak while away,.  Pour half a cup of bleach into each toilet bowl (not the tank) before heading out to prevent bacteria build-up in your toilets while you're away.

Run your garbage disposal well before leaving and clean it by mixing 1/2 c. vinegar with 1/2 c. water and pouring the mixture down the drain.

Do a Quick Cleaning

No one wants to come home from vacation to a dirty home.  Before you leave, do a quick straightening-up around the apartment.  Be sure to clean all dirty dishes before heading out as these can attract pests.  Take out all garbage and/or recycling, too.

Keep Burglars at Bay

Don't turn off every light in your home before heading out.  Keep on a light or two and/or invest in an automatic or variable light timer to give the appearance that someone is home.  One like this from Enover easily plugs into a standard outlet and has 24 hour / 7 day programming with a built-in battery backup.  It even has a random setting to keep your light schedule unpredictable while you're away.

Be sure to lock all doors and windows before leaving.

Prep Your Pantry (and Fridge!)

There's nothing that can ruin your vacation relaxation quite like coming home to a refrigerator full of spoiled food.  Before leaving, clean your refrigerator and toss any perishable items that will expire while you're away such as milk, cream, eggs, etc.  Also get rid of any open jars and beverages as these can quickly spoil.  Avoid waste and give any unused items to a friend instead of throwing them away!

Rid your pantry of any open items to discourage pests from invading your food supply while you're on vacation.  If there are nonperishable items you'd like to save that won't be stale when you return, pack them in air-tight containers.

Double Check Your Batteries

Test your smoke and CO detectors before leaving to ensure they are in good working order and that the batteries are still good.  If your detectors need service, contact the leasing office right away.

Hold the Mail

Go online to set up Hold Mail Service by the USPS while you're away.  Don't let mail pile up as this is a sure sign to potential burglars that you're away.  Also contact any newspapers to have your subscription placed on hold before you leave town.  Contact a friend or neighbor to keep an eye out for any packages left outside your door and collect them.

Pay Bills in Advance

Make sure all your bills are paid in advance so you don't return home to any past due notices or fees.  Most businesses allow for easy online payments, and we offer online rent payment.
